The holy centre of Adichunchanagiri in Karnataka’s Mandya district has been deprived of pure drinking water system for several decades. However, the village, along with 128 others in Nagamangala taluk, will soon receive water under the Adichunchanagiri Drinking Water Project. The MEIL is executing the project.

The 128 villages situated in elevated regions, have scanty water supply. The water is contaminated with fluoride and loaded with other chemicals. The health of people dependent on this water, continues to be affected adversely. The drinking water problem aggravates, especially during summer. The people of these villages are dependent on water supplied through tankers.
To fulfil the drinking water needs of the people living in these regions, the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (RDPR) department conceptualized the Adichunchanagiri drinking water project.

Ever since, the MEIL has been steadfastly working towards completing this project, which involves drawing waters from the Markonahalli reservoir in Nagamangala taluk. Here, water will be pumped in reverse direction—from lower to higher levels.

Project Overview

The MEIL is constructing a water treatment plant, pure water pumping main, jack well cum pump house/utilization sump, three sub-stations of 11/66 kV capacity each, and laying a pipeline network of 220 km. Works were primarily carried out in Kunigal and Nagamangala taluks. The infrastructure major has also set up 52 overhead tanks, a master balancing reservoir, and three zonal balancing reservoirs.

The whole project will run on an automation system (CADA system). This can help monitor the water flow into all the villages and track the water storage in all the overhead tanks. Once the project is completed, a population of 1.12 lakh will benefit from this.
