Know About Meil

Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL) is a $5bn multi-sector infrastructure company from India taking giant strides globally.

Mumbai's Underground Answer to Traffic Woes
Thane-Borivali Underground Twin Tube Road Tunnel

In the bustling metropolis of Mumbai, where traffic congestion is a daily challenge, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has developed a transformative project to enhance connectivity between Thane and Borivali. The Thane-Borivali Underground Twin Tube Road Tunnel project aims to address the travel woes along this critical east-west corridor of the city of dreams.

MEIL has been entrusted with executing two crucial segments of this ambitious project. Once completed, these 3-lane twin tunnels, measuring 5.75 km and 6.09 km respectively, will be India's longest underground road tunnels, specifically designed for traffic management in a metro city.

Enhancing Commutes

Currently, the 25-kilometre gap between NH8 near Borivali and Thane-Ghodbunder Road presents a significant hurdle, leading to extended travel times and exacerbating congestion issues. The proposed road tunnel beneath the Sanjay Gandhi National Park seeks to cut this distance by over 50%, promising a more efficient and time-saving commute. The approach to the project is methodical, with a strong focus on environmental sustainability.

Urban Connectivity Reinvented

MEIL is set to employ Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) at a Reduced Surface Level of 23m, minimizing surface disturbance and ensuring the well-being of the park's ecosystem. The TBMs, equipped with rotating cutting wheels and hydraulic jacks, represent state-of-the-art tunnel excavation technology, minimizing noise and vibration.

Smart Concrete Solutions

Our scope of work encompasses diverse aspects, including viaducts, transition ramps, cut and cover structures, shafts, bored tunnels, cross passages, roadworks, and comprehensive survey and geotechnical investigations. The construction progress is well underway, with topography surveys and geotechnical investigations at the Thane end marking significant milestones.

Temporary offices have been established, and major procurement activities, including the finalization of the TBM with Herrenknecht, are advancing seamlessly. As the Thane- Borivali twin tunnel project progresses, it brings together expertise and innovation to create a lasting impact on Mumbai's urban landscape.
