SEPC Power Private Limited, a non-govt company registered at the Registrar of Companies was incorporated in 1995. The MEIL built the 525-MW Tuticorin project for SEPC to meet the power requirement of the Tamil Nadu state grid. The project is located on the Bay of Bengal coast, 10-km away from Thootikodi town of Tamil Nadu.

The MEIL built the thermal power plant with the most negligible environmental impact, using the latest advanced technology. The power generated at this plant is for the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (TANGEDCO), to meet the state’s power requirements.

The company installed a coal jetty, conveyor, a 500 TPH coal handling plant, a seawater intake of 6,700 cumecs and a cooling water system with a capacity of 66,000 cumecs. It also created a 10-km-long pipeline system and used 15,000 tonnes of steel in the project.

A 275-metre-long chimney with modern standards to reduce pollution was constructed. The Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) manufactured the 1,700-TPH capacity boiler and the 555-MW capacity turbine generators for this plant. The TANGEDCO entrusted the laying of the 48-km-long 400-kV transmission lines to the MEIL.

The SEPC came to an agreement with the TSEB for 30 years. Contracts were signed with domestic and foreign companies to supply coal for the project. In 2018, the boiler hydro-testing was successfully completed. The company will soon complete the electro-mechanical works and make the plant available for power generation.
